BRITISH CHAMBER

Welcome to the new BCTFN website!

After a year’s absence, the Ploenchit Fair, the major fund raising event of the BCTFN, returned in November 2004 in a new venue in the center of town.  Courtesy of Mr. Brian L. Marcar of BEC Tero and Khun Pairojana Toongtong of Suan Lum Night Bazaar the Fair was held both inside the BEC Tero Hall and the adjacent car park area.

For those unfamiliar with the Ploenchit Fair – the theme has remained the same for some 48 years.  It is that of a British family fairground and over 2,500 members of the community voluntarily organize and run the many stalls.  British companies and organizations, together with ‘friends’, donate goods and materials to help meet the costs of the Fair and provide prizes.  Until 2001 the Fair was held in the gardens of the British Embassy, but after the September 11th atrocity in the U.S.A., had to move out because of ongoing security considerations.

Today the Ploenchit Fair is arguably the biggest event on the British Calendar and is known and admired throughout S.E. Asia – revenues have continued to increase over the years and it has proved a successful and enjoyable way to raise funds whilst promoting British interests in Thailand.   Money raised at the Fair has enabled the Foundation to allocate funds for projects to over 35 different charities annually throughout Thailand.

The 2004 Fair was a huge success; over 20,000 people visited the Fairground to enjoy a family day out.  Members of all expatriate communities turned out in force and mingled with their Thai compatriots and many were still enjoying the activities at the close at 9.30 pm.  Suan Lum rang to the sound of laughter and merriment.  There was an amazing range of activities for children of all ages, shopping galore, plus international entertainment and cuisine to suit all tastes.

From first estimates at the time of going to print, the Fair looks to have raised nearly Bht.6 million for Thai charities in the most enjoyable manner for all.

The BCTFN wishes to sincerely thank all members of the British Chamber and the British community and volunteers who willing supported the Fair and gave up many hours of their time to make the day such an outstanding and memorable occasion whilst enabling this Committee to continue to support the needy during 2005.
